At 56, Nana Patekar is planning to turn filmmaker soon, and wants to direct Ajay Devgan.
AT 56, Nana Patekar is eager to take the next step in showbiz. The consummate actor, who has more than three decades of theatre and several acclaimed movies behind him, wants to direct a film. "Hopefully, I will be able to begin work in May 2006.
I have a good story in hand - one that revolves around a cop and a mentally challenged person who can see the future," Nana told us, while he was in the city to shoot for Bengal director Gautam Ghosh's new film, Yatra, co-starring Rekha and Deepti Naval.

Nana is keen to cast Ajay Devgan in his film and reasons, "Ajay is an intuitive actor who has no insecurities, and he is a good human being. We are contrasts to each other. While he comes to the sets and spontaneously enacts his scenes, I, owing to my background in theatre, rehearse a few times."

Nana has been toying with the thought of turning director for quite some time now. In fact, soon after Ab Tak Chappan, it was reported that he would direct a film for Ram Gopal Varma. "Ramu and I got busy with other projects meanwhile. Now, I'll be directing for Prakash Jha," he informs.
Having worked with national award winner Prakash Jha in Apaharan, he tells us, "When Jha first approached me for the film, I wasn't too happy with my part. He did a few revisions until I was convinced. I guess I was a sounding board to Jha when we were working on the script."

Nana, who likes to work on one film per year, tells us that this time he's made an exception. He has films like Bluffmaster with Abhishek Bachchan, and Taxi 9211 with John Abraham coming up for release, and Rajkumar Santoshi's Saamna is in the making.
On the home front, Nana's son Malhar may also step into the film industry. "He is learning photography. I don't know if he is interested in acting. But if he wants to act, I won't stop him."

Before going back to the sets, the actor tells us about his relatively new passion - shooting - and by this we don't refer to films. "The national shooting championships are happening in Hyderabad but I didn't qualify for it. Compared to my friend Rajyavardhan Rathore, I am a novice in the sport," he laughs.
